Recording Label: Virgin Records. |

Public Image Ltd. First issue.
Interestingly Side 1 plays the songs from Side 2 and vice versa. This was probably a cock up when printing the details onto the cassette shell. I am unsure whether many/any other copies are the same.
2 No 2 Metal Box (cassette).
Recording Label: Virgin Records. |
ISMN: ? |
Public image Ltd. Metal Box. (Thanks Mick & Pete).
The cassette issue of Metal Box was interesting for a number of reasons.
Firstly because the tracklist had been jumbled around and secondly because of the rechristening of No birds do sing.
Memories & Swan Lake have been moved to the begining of Side 2, being replaced on Side 1 by "no bodies" (an alternative title for No birds do sing) and Graveyard (an instrumental version of Another that appeared originally as a bside on the Memories single).
The final three songs on Side 2 are also grouped together under one track.

This is a very good quality live recording from Public Image Ltd it was recorded at the Astoria in London UK on the 28th September 1987. The cassette comes with do it yourself artwork. This recording cuts out half way yhrough "This is not a love song" which is a real shame as it really is a good recording and i was enjoying listening to it? (Thanks Simon).

I bought this tape at a tape stall at the Barras market in Glasgow in 2001. Sound quality is excellent. A fantastic gig too. See the CD listing of this gig for much more info.
Has very basic artwork with full tracklist. The actual venue isn't even mentioned.
43 No 43 Madrid, Spain, 1986. (cassette).
Recording Label: ? |
ISMN: ? |
Madrid, Spain, Sala Astoria - 17.10.1986. (Thanks Mick)
I bought this cassette (along with the Barcelona one!) from a Spanish market, while on holiday there in 2001. The quality is fantastic on both cassettes and they are obviously both very low generation copies.
The artwork for the Madrid tape is actually a page taken from the "Sex Pistols Files" book that was published in the 90's.
The artwork came without a tracklist, so I had to make a note of it myself while listening to the tape.
44 No 44 Barcelona 1986. (cassette).

71 No 71 PiL Live at Red Rocks. (cassette).

PiL Live at Red Rocks, cassette. (Thanks Mick & Ebay US).
I did not intend to add this cassette to the site until I had a little more information about it. However I have been unable to locate any, so I shall just add it.
I bought this tape about 5 months ago from Ebay US. It was part of a lot that also featured Waterboys and Skunk Anansie live tapes. The only information was that the gig was recorded live at Red Rocks (no year or anything else!) The bidding was low and it seemed a great opportunity to get a new PiL gig, so I made sure I won the auction.
Upon first listen to the tape it was obvious from the setlist that it dates from 1987. However, Red Rocks is not listed in my 1987 US tour itinerary book, so it could be that the venue is mis-labeled. There are no other clues as to the background of the gig. (Does anyone have any information???)
It sounds like an outdoor performance, so it was probably a festival appearance. PiL play well, although the sound quality is a bit flat with almost no bass.
It appears to be a heavily edited setlist, which again suggests a festival slot.
Lydon doesn't say very much throughout, but does complain about the heat: "Have you got any idea how fucking hot it is up on this stage? We need beer!"
Again, if anyone has any solid information about this tape or gig please let us know.
72 No 72 Live in Newcastle 1978. (cassette).
Recording Label: More Fun Record York |
ISMN: ? |
Live in Newcastle 1978. (Thanks Mick).
This tape appeared on Ebay last year for a pretty stupid price. It's obviously mislabeled since PiL never played in Newcastle in 1978.
Part of me actually hoped that it would be 25th Dec or the first Brussels set mis-labeled but in truth it's just a VERY shitty version of Paris, 78. The worst quality version I've heard - slowed down and with almost too much tape hiss to bear. AVOID!
The unlisted version of "Fodderstompf" is actually the 2nd version of Annalisa.
Religion is still incomplete.

86 No 86 Birmingham '92.(cassette).
Recording Label: ? |
ISMN: ? |
Birmingham, UK, Aston Villa Centre - 5.5.1992. (Thanks Gary Tracey).
I missed the opportunity to add this show to my list back in 1999, so it's great to get it at last. Better late than never, especially considering that PiL recordings from 1992 are like gold dust!
Good quality recording, despite a bit of hiss. No artwork or tracklist.
EMI is incomplete and ends when the tape ends.
87 No 87 Manchester '87.(cassette).
Recording Label: ? |
ISMN: ? |
Manchester, UK, Apollo Theatre - 25.9.1987. (Thanks Gary Tracey).
PiL recordings from '87 are almost as rare as those from '92, so adding another to the collection is always a red-letter day.
A bit of a hissy recording and a bit muffled, but still a good show to listen to.
Poor quality artwork with slighty innacurate tracklist.
This is undoubtedly an incomplete recording. Other recordings from the UK tour tend to end with This is Not a Love Song & Holidays in the Sun.
Fat Chance Hotel is on Side 2, not Side 1 as on the tracklist.
Tracklist shows "4 Enclosed Walls" but it is actually "Open & Revolving".

89 No 89 Japan, Tokyo - 1987.(cassette).
Recording Label: ? |
ISMN: ? |
Tokyo, Japan, Kokaido Shibuya - 10.12.1987. (Thanks Mick).
Tape bought from the Barrowland market in Glasgow in 1997. Sounds like a good low generation tape.
It's a soundboard recording, the gig having been broadcast (although not in its entirety) on Japanese radio.
The artwork is good quality and is printed on high quality glossy paper.
The date is wrong however. It says 12.10.1987, although it was actually 10.12.1987. Easy mistake to make really... Due to this I had the gig listed with the wrong date in my collection for many a year.
There is a very crude splice after The Body when we hear the bass intro to Public image but it quickly segues into This is Not a Love Song. Pretty sloppy for a radio broadcast.
Great gig to listen to. Would be excellent if a complete version surfaced!
