Brighton, UK, Top Rank Club - 2.11.1983.  (Thanks Mick)

NOTE: THERE ARE TWO DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF THE BRIGHTON GIG. THE FIRST REVIEW IS A REVIEW OF THE COMPLETE SOURCE. THE SECOND REVIEW IS OF AN INCOMPLETE VERSION. BOTH RECORDINGS ARE FROM DIFFERENT SOURCES.

Recording 1:

The most interesting thing about this gig is that it features Bad Baby in the setlist. This may have been the only time it was played on the UK tour. This alone is a good enough reason to get this gig as it's not a bad version - very upbeat and funky. A real pity that it didn't remain in the setlist.

Lydon makes a lot of comments between songs, mostly to the people spitting at him, although most of it is difficult to make out due to the quality not being the sharpest.

My version of this gig sounds like a pretty low generation recording which adds a little to its appeal.

The reason the running time is so long compared to all other gigs from this tour is that there have been no tape cuts between songs which really stretches out the time. Even after the final song of the set there is another 3 or 4 minutes of crowd noise...

Between encores there are no cuts, but a few minutes of house music.

There is a fadeout at the very end.

Recording 2:

I was quite excited to get this CDR from a fellow trader as it had been listed as an upgrade of the previous recording, however I was more than a little disappointed. It's anything but an upgrade and is in fact a much inferior recording.

Although the CDR has 10 tracks there are only 9 songs. One track is entitled "encore break".

To begin with the bass is much too high (no doubt the person who tranferred it from cassette wanted to recreate some of the early PiL magic!) however with Lou Bernardi on bass it hasn't worked and it's left us with a much too boomy, disappointing alternative to the complete master. This combined with the fact that it's incomplete (and is much shorter than the first version in general!) leaves us with a recording that would deserve a one way ticket to the wheelie bin were it not for the fact that it's apparently from a different source to the complete version. This alone has saved it from the chop!

This recording only lasts 45, making it 15 minutes shorter than the other version.

There is a cut between Chant and Anarchy.
